on the 16th of this month I was at the WOTH to check on progress of the new elevator - as I was at the east end I also checked on the progress of the connector trail Dutchess RT stage 5 - I had seen that the connector trail had been paved - all that remains is the SR 55 overpass brdge - phase 4 - to be put into place to complete the Maybrook trailway system - Hopewell Jct. But I could see this being pretty spectacular in the Fall, and its very quiet and peaceful. The trail parallels the other set of Metro North-owned disused Beacon Line tracks as it travels over 23 miles from Brewster through Southeast, Patterson, Pawling, Beekman and East Fishkill to the hamlet of Hopewell Junction. Trail paved a few hundred yards north toward I84. Not sure about the intent of this, as the other section from Overrocker Rd to Morgan lake (about 2.5 miles) doesn't have this 'feature'. Good: trail is in excellent condition and very wide. From the dirt parking lot take the trail off to the right. No doubt in my mind whether or not its open. Lots of gradual uphill going north which made the return trip easier. All of them are van-accessible with striped access aisles. I wanted to see for myself where the Empire State Trail might go. Typical rail trail views with woods and rocks, but the view of the lake and wetlands was very pleasant and broke it up. Through the trees, I could see a giant old trestle bridge. The incline is very gradual, so not super hard but makes for a fairly long pull either way, so keep this in mind. Enjoyable ride overall. You can walk your bike along RR, via open fence for this 50 yards or so or cycle downhill on Peaceable Hill rd and up the hill on East Main to get back on.
